Siena

IMG-20160125-WA0024Siena’s origins are surrounded by myth: the story goes that the city was founded by Senius, the son of Romulus. Historical statements attribute the first human settlement in this area to the Etruscans, who gave the name Sena to the settlement. After it was conquered by the Roman Empire, the place took on the name of Saena Julia.

In the Middle Ages, Siena became an extremely important town, due to its intense demographic growth and the urban expansion of the town. Economic development brought wealth and bitter conflicts. The worst was the one between the Papal supporters (Guelphs) and the Empire supporters (the Ghibellines) After facing a series of internal struggles, Siena which sided with the Ghibellines fought against nearby Florence, which declared itself a supporter of the Guelphs. The tension grew worse and in 1260 a true war began that culminated in the Battle of Montaperti. The Siena Ghibellines were then defeated in the famous Battle of Colle Val d’Elsa and were sent away from the city, which fell to Guelph rule. The Guelphs ruled the city for a long time. Siena enjoyed its period of maximum splendor starting from 1200, largely due to the “Good Government” of Nine: this was the form of government that lasted longest in Siena and which allowed the city to flourish both economically and artistically. In 1348 the city was hit by the plague and suffered greatly, also economically and politically: there was a series of governments one after the other, which created instability and which forced Siena to join the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, thereby losing its independence.

The people of the city soon rebelled against the rule by Gian Galeazzo Visconti and managed to make him leave the city in 1402. For the next century, Siena was rules by the Medici and then by the Lorena families: from the 16th century, the city went through a very prosperous period, both artistically, culturally and economically.
1656 was the year when the traditional Palio Race was started. From that moment it has been organized every year in the city, attracting tourists from all over the world.
Between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, Siena fell under the rule of Napoleon, just like other cities in this region. Napoleon proclaimed Florence as the capital of the new Kingdom of Etruria. The Austrians arrived after Napoleon, who ruled until 1859. They were then defeated by the Franco-Piedmont army. In 1860, the temporary government of the newly liberated Florence joined forces with the Kingdom of Sardinia and then, the year after, with the Kingdom of Italy.

San Gimignano

Next is the town of San Gimignano, also known for its beautifully preserved medieval towers . 14 left out of 72 initially built in the 13th century. We will walk you to the square of the well, the center of the town for you to enjoy All the fine shops which also sell the local smooth, dry white wine called Vernaccia, and most of all the best ice cream in the world.

Monteriggioni

IMG-20160125-WA0018Until the XI century Monteriggioni was a station of standstill on the Francigena Road in Tuscany. Siena transformed Monteriggioni in the imposing Fortress to protection of the boundary north in the wars against the anemy Florence.
Inside Monteriggioni there were in XIV century beyond 150 families with about 600 inhabitant.

The wall was arised since 1213 (see the headstone on the Romea Gate) until 1219 and then they strengthen in varied years (1260, 1279) until the 1545. The wall up of Monteriggioni are long beyond 500 meters, tall twenty meters and surrounded from 14 towers to square base. The Fortress in the beyond two hundred years “of use” spent of hand between Florence and Siena.

My husband and I were in Florence and Tuscany recently for 3 weeks and we went on 7 tours with Under The Tuscan Sun. We toured with them last may and had such a great time we knew we had to book with them again. We specifically asked for Andrea as our driver/guide because we had him last year and knew him…Don’t hesitate to choose this company when you will be in Italy!

My husband and I traveled to Italy for the first time for our 5th wedding anniversary. As part of our first European trip, we tried to fit in as many things as possible. Our day with Under the Tuscan sun was perfect! There was so much to see and experience, and yet it was a wonderfully relaxing day thanks to our customized itinerary and transportation. Andrea was wonderful to work with-prompt, courteous, friendly, and accommodating. I highly recommend his company!

    :

This was a family trip to Italy. We stayed in Florence for 2 weeks and planned day trips every other day. We had a long list of what we wanted to see but had difficulty deciding what, when, how, etc.
Under The Tuscan Tours worked with us to plan a FABULOUS trip. We told them what we wanted to do & see and they worked with us to plan our trip. Their drivers / tour guides were prompt, very informative, courteous, called ahead to make reservations when needed, knew great places to stop for photos, best places to shop, etc. Anything we needed they helped us take care of.
Having them help you plan an itinerary is the best way to spend your trip, no wasting time standing on a street corner with a map trying to figure out where to eat lunch ! They took care of tickets for museums, reservations for meals, maps for walking around each town we visited, water bottles in the car. The drivers and tour guides, especially Andrea, were very friendly, it was like traveling with family !

Andrea became like family traveling to and from, giving us recommendations and being so generous with his suggestions and time. He added transportation where I missed asking for rides and hooked us up with some of the best wineries and restaurants across Italy. I could not have been any happier with the service and special treatment. I would wholeheartedly recommend using this company and from a cost standpoint the value was excellent. I would line this up against a bus tour any day and be so much happier in the end. Flexible, affordable and accommodating everything you need for a successful stress free trip.
I left feeling like we made a friend forever!!

We were on a girls trip in Florence and decide to go on a Tuscan tour. We called the night before and they were ready to offer their services. Andreas was the most kind and helpful guide ever. He made sure to take the roads less busy and gave us useful information about the area. Without this service, we wouldn’t be able to see all these places in one day! Thank you Andreas for a beautiful day well spent! Highly recommended!

My husband and I were in Florence recently for two weeks and we went on five tours with Under The Tuscan Sun. We toured with them last summer and had such a wonderful time we knew we had to book with them again. We specifically asked for Andrea as our driver/guide because we had him last year and knew him to extremely knowledgeable about the area, professional, friendly, and so much fun to be with. We did so many fun things on our tours – visited wineries, hunted for white truffles, saw the Carrera marble quarry (fascinating), ate incredible food, saw amazing cities (San Gimignano, Siena, Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, the Val d’Orcia in Tuscany,…) and we always had plenty of time to browse around wherever it was that we stopped. Andrea always said, “Take your time! Is no problem!” We simply would not have been able to see and do as much as we did without Under The Tuscan Sun and (especially) Andrea. I can’t recommend them highly

I have had the pleasure of touring Tuscany not once but twice with Andrea. We had such a great time the first time we went, we specifically requested him again for our second trip. Andrea is affable, knowledgable, super friendly and the best tour guy you could ask for. He was a careful driver, never rushed us at any of our stops and took us to some really unique locations we never would have known about on our own. I travel a lot and our day at the vineyard with Andrea is truly one of my most memorable days of my life.

We are already planning to use him again on our next trip!
